What we do
One of Books 4 Life's main reasons for being is generating an income for charity through the sale of second hand books. Almost all of the income from book sales goes straight to charitable projects and organisations (a maximum of 10% is re-invested in the organisation).
Books 4 Life does not run its own charity projects. We feel that we can make a more valuable and effective contribution to the promotion of human rights and poverty reduction by supporting the work of existing organisations. With this in mind, half of the money is divided up between Amnesty International and Oxfam Novib, two large and widely acclaimed organisations whose work contributes to a better world. The rest of the money is reserved for small scale charity projects around the globe, chosen by the shop's own volunteers.
Each year, the total sum that each shop has raised for charity is announced during a festive public event and the money is handed over to the various beneficiaries. This may take place during an associated activity organised by the school or university, such as the celebration of Human Rights Day or on the occasion of an event organised by the Books 4 Life shop itself. To find out when and where these activities will be held, check our “news” section for details.
