Welcome to the website of Books 4 Life, the second-hand charity bookshop
LATEST NEWS:
Saying goodbye to Books 4 Life Utrecht
After just over 2 years, Books 4 Life Utrecht has unfortunately been forced to close its doors. In early 2011, the board was informed by its partner in Utrecht, JoHo, that the space which was being occupied by the Books 4 Life shop would be used for something else from the end of the year. Books 4 Life had to find a new shop location from September 2011 and set up a committee to search for an alternative space. After many months, the search for a new shop had sadly still not produced any results, so the shop has now closed. However, both the board and the volunteers are extremely proud of everything that was achieved by Books 4 Life in Utrecht:
- Around € 15.000 for charity. Half of this amount has been donated to small scale projects within Books 4 Life Utrecht's chosen charity, the ‘Sao Sary Foundation’. With the shop's donations, 5 families in 2010 and 10 families in 2011 were able to improve their economic independence in Cambodia. This means that children no longer have to work in the city and are no longer vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. For more information, see: http://ssfcambodia.org/
- Around 80 volunteers had the chance to join in with fun and challenging volunteer work, leading to some lasting friendships!
- And thousands of books were able to find a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) owner, making many customers very happy
Books 4 Life Utrecht also organised lots of events that were covered in the local newspapers:
- The various "Book wants you" activities, with books hidden all over the city as a publicity stunt.
- The story writing competitions in the context of National Book Week, for which the winning story was presented to customers as a gift.
- The Book Nights to celebrate the two birthdays in the shop, which saw different bands coming to play and the total money raised for charity announced to the public. During the Book Night 2011, Vivian Reijs came by to accept the donation for the Sao Sary Foundation.
Despite the short period that the Books 4 Life shop in Utrecht was open, it has made a real contribution to development aid, social responsibility and sustainability. We hope that one day in the future we will be able to welcome customers again in a new Books 4 Life shop in Utrecht!
